The average big-city public school student takes 112 mandatory standardized tests between kindergarten and 12th grade. In 2016, the Michigan State Legislature passed a law mandating the closure of all Detroit schools in the bottom 5% of Michigan schools for three years in a row. High stakes school accountability, or attaching consequences to standardized tests, is now a major factor in Detroit’s education landscape. What are the impacts? What are the concerns?
